All Hail the AI Leader... or Maybe Not

I often find myself pondering what truly defines a leader. For me, leadership is about influence, vision, and the ability to inspire, all while being open, honest, and transparent, with a touch of charisma for good measure.

Sounds like a tall order, doesn’t it?

However, the cornerstone of effective leadership, in my view, is credibility. Without that foundation, the rest falls apart.

That’s my take. Yours might be different.

But how often do we truly invest in building credible and capable leaders?

Leadership: A Role or a Promotion?

In many organisations I’ve encountered, leadership positions are treated as the next step in a career ladder, rather than intentional placements. Often, advancing in a career means taking on a people management role, regardless of whether the individual has the desire or aptitude for it.

For technical specialists, declining such roles can lead to a feeling of being stuck: same pay grade, same level, no clear path forward.

This system doesn’t just stifle individual growth; it creates risks for teams and organisations alike. Strong leadership brings clarity, trust, and alignment, while poor leadership leads to confusion, disengagement, and siloed thinking.

Why Leadership Development Matters

Developing leaders is essential. It’s not an optional extra; it’s a necessity. I’ve witnessed organisations transform through well-designed leadership interventions and tailored training. These efforts don’t work by magic, they work because they are intentional and focused.

Yet, far too often, organisations throw new leaders into roles with little to no support, leaving them to “figure it out” on their own. The result? Struggles for the leader, frustration for their team, and a negative impact on the organisation as a whole.

Leadership is a Skill, Not a Talent

Leadership isn’t something we are born with. It’s a skill that must be developed, practised, and refined over time.

This is where artificial intelligence falls short. Leadership is not about automating decisions or crunching numbers; it’s about connection, empathy, and strategic thinking.
